Despite being a budget trailer, the Taipan Taurus still offers campers a comfortable set up with plenty of room for the whole family.

As with many other models competing at this end of the market, most of the components used in Taurus campers are built in China but much of the assembly work, including the independent trailing arm suspension, is done here in Australia.


Hot-dipped galvanised steel is used for the 100x50mm drawbar, the 75x50mm chassis rails and also the body work itself. It’s basic but gives the trailer a reasonable finish that protects the steel. Up front, the 2200mm drawbar accommodates not only the poly-block tow hitch and jockey wheel, but also the stoneguard and an aluminium checkerplate storage box that’s well sized at 1200x500x500mm.


There are good reasons for having the drawbar rails wider than those used for the chassis. Being extended to 2200mm, they not only have to cater for whatever is loaded into the storage box but also the stresses imposed by rough road travel.

The single 80L water tank is mounted between the chassis rails at the rear. That, along with the rear corner stabilisers, is set quite high to allow for the decent departure angle. I did think the stabilisers would be better protected against damage if they were fitted in line with the chassis rails, rather than across the trailer.

The independent suspension welded to the chassis looks to be a standard design with coil springs, trailing arms and two shock absorbers per wheel. It travelled reasonably well on our muddy test course, with enough clearance to manoeuvre across deep ruts without scraping the chassis.

The simple trailer box comes with infills before and after the wheel arches with holders to accommodate gas cylinders and jerry cans on both sides of the trailer. On the nearside there is a water tank filler and a 12V pump-operated cold water tap. The checkerplate tailgate supported the essential spare wheel in this review camper, however, Taipan has since moved the spare wheels on all its campers to the drawbar. To get to the trailer bay, you can either open the tailgate (accessible when camped) or by unclipping and lifting up the base of the bed.
