Legend Cruiser 15.6: Video Review
The Cruiser 15.6 may be compact but it’s full of surprises, making it the perfect choice for couples and solo adventurers alike.
Australian caravans are built in a variety of external lengths. Generally, if fitted with an ensuite, they are between 4.26m (14ft) and 7m (23ft) long, with the longer lengths favoured by many, even when it comes to offroad vans.
There are exceptions to this, though, and one example is Legend Caravans’ Cruiser 15.6. A single-axle caravan, the 15.6 in its name refers to its external length of 15ft 6in (4.62m).
Inside the Cruiser, the layout has several interesting characteristics. It features a rear entry door and a rear kitchen, which is split along the rear and offside walls, with the bathroom cubicle in between. The nearside L-shaped lounge suits the smaller interior well and means the two front single beds also fit nicely.
Underpinning all of this is a very substantial chassis. Built with a main frame of 100x50mm (4x2in) RHS main rails and a 150x50mm (6x2in) drawbar that runs back to the suspension mounts, there’s the usual box section of 50x50mm (2x2in) cross members.
Control Rider coil spring independent suspension is designed to handle the rough and tumble of Australia’s roads, while trailing arms and shock absorbers complete the package. Galvanised sheet-protected water tanks are fitted fore and aft of the suspension, giving the optimum position for both weight balance and minimising damage.
Also fitted to the chassis along the front offside rail are two battery boxes for the 100Ah deep-cycle batteries. This neatly gets around the problem of using the tunnel boot for the batteries, given the lack of a conventional boot. The charger and associated 12V fuses are still in the tunnel boot, though.
