Experience something a little bit different with the GT Campers Expedition.

After years touring the outback and writing articles for motoring magazines, GT Campers creator Glenn Torrens discovered that what was needed was a dead-simple camper that was easy to set up and pack up, provided a modicum of comfort and facilities and met all the practical necessities of surviving Australian bush conditions. From this epiphany, the Expedition was born.


The current GT Campers models (Expedition vehicle conversion and Off-Road Touring Trailer camper) are both equipped with a slide-out removable kitchen, a tub lid to keep out the weather and dust, a roof-topper tent for accommodation and a swing-around awning for shade and shelter.

The Expedition conversion is available for present-gen Toyota HiLux, Ford Ranger and Mazda BT50s and Glenn is able to liaise with a dealer for a brand new vehicle and fit it out with one of his Expedition backs before registration, or he can install the setup on a customer’s exisiting vehicle.


To carry the tent and awning – and to keep dust out – Glenn developed his own structural tub cover. It’s a vacuum-formed resin-impregnated foam-core fibreglass job that is lightweight but strong enough to carry up to 400kg. It is sealed, as with all apertures, with rubber seals, assisted by nylon stops in each corner to prevent the lid walking dust under the seal while travelling.

The standard-fitment tent is a Featherlite Front Runner double (1300x2440mm), chosen because it weighs only 41kg, spares are readily available and the rear window overhang is relatively small, making way for the awning. The floor is 1300mm off the ground, not excessive by any standards, so access via the ladder is relatively easy.
