Enjoy an American classic with an Aussie twist with the new Winnebago Minnie.

One of the surprises about the Winnebago Minnie was the way it handled on the road – in short, very well. My tow vehicle was an older model Nissan Patrol which handled the Minnie nicely, and the vehicle’s age also means that it doesn’t hide anything coming from the rear and any towing quirks get transferred straight to the driver.

There were very few and it was quite a relaxing drive. In part, the relatively light Tare weight of 1970kg contributes to that but it also seems to be quite a well-balanced van.


Like many American-built caravans, the under-chassis area is actually enclosed by corrugated plastic sheets but I can assure you the chassis does have 150mm (6in) I-beam (not RHS) rails with smaller cross members, all of which are hot-dipped galvanised.

More conventionally, the drawbar rails are 150mm (6in) RHS complete with ball coupling, swing up jockey wheel and handbrake. A little more familiar, at least on imported caravans, is the tandem-axle Al-Ko Independent Rubber Suspension (IRS).

Aluminium is used for both the body framework and the floor joists but not the exterior, which is a gel-coated fibreglass called Lamilux L1000 under which, along with the frame, is fibreglass insulation all around, including under the floor.


From the outside, the Minnie is nicely streamlined at the front (without a window) and rather boxy-looking at the rear. In addition to the front tunnel boot, there is also a second external bin at the offside rear. And I must make mention of the mid-offside slide-out.


Electrics, for the most part, seem to be well-sorted. All the mains cabling is to Australian Standards and the 12V system seemed functional. A central switch panel is located in an overhead locker by the entry door.
