Southern Land Campers PT 12: Review
The internal and external facilities of the Southern Land Campers PT 12 are surprising and impressive to say the least.
The Southern Land Campers PT 12 is built to ‘go the distance’, courtesy of its fully-welded aluminium frame supported by a heavy duty 150x100x50x3mm SupaGal chassis. The Cruisemaster independent 2500kg-rated suspension, 12in electric brakes, dual shockers and springs also complement its offroad capability. And its durability and toughness is matched by the external and internal aesthetics.
DESIGN & CONSTRUCTION
The electrical suite is more than adequate, with two Enerdrive 120W solar panels mounted on the roof, 100Ah AGM battery, 240V Projector battery charger, DC-DC battery charging system, two 12V and two USB outlets, water and power monitors, and two internal and one external powerpoints.
In fact, the 12V system in the van is brilliantly configured for user-friendliness, including conveniently placed external outlets for any appliance from your compressor or to attach a light strip for a late-night camp stop, as well as a water tank inlet point.
And the PT 12 trips the light fantastic – two ceiling LED lights, strip lighting above the external kitchen, bed-side reading lights, two external LED lights, a strip light in the external pantry, an under-bed storage light and a light-up entry handle.
Indeed, many hours of thought and planning have gone into this hybrid pop-top – even the portable toilet is stored under the rear left seat so it is easily accessed from inside when needed, and you can easily house all your camping equipment as there’s access under the bed from outside.
Weighing in at 1500kg with a ball weight of 115kg, the PT 12 is easy to tow and has excellent accessibility on narrow bush tracks given its width which matches the average 4WD and 2.3m (7ft 7in) travel height. It rides on 265/75 R16 BF Goodrich all terrain tyres and Sunraysia rims.
Internally, the PT 12 has an immaculate finish. The chic cabinets are custom-made and the spacious, cushioned dinette is extremely comfortable. The modern kitchen boasts a two-burner cooker, stainless steel sink, Waeco 80L upright fridge and plenty of storage. And the full-size innerspring mattress provides a touch of luxury and would add to the joy of long-term travel. There is also abundant under-bed storage, a CD/radio with two speakers, and a Truma gas/electric hot water system.
