Best Aussie Vans Finalist 2015 Regal RSV Test Review

By: Malcolm Street, Photography by: Ellen Dewar

Eye-catching and spacious, the Regal RSV offers a touch of luxury.

Our review Regal RSV had an external length of 6.58m (21ft 7in), a Tare weight of 2340kg and a load capacity of just over 500kg. In caravan-design language, that’s enough to build a rear entry door van opening on to the popular rear bathroom, offside dinette, nearside kitchen and front island bedroom layout.

Enclosing the van is a body of a familiar construction – meranti timber frame and aluminium composite cladding, along with the aforementioned lower alloy checkerplating.  Large Seitz double-glazed acrylic windows are fitted all-round and the security door is the Camec variety.

Although the Regal RSV is really only kitted out as an on-road caravan, it does come with a 150x50mm (6x2in) railed DuraGal chassis and drawbar. Both gal sheet-protected water tanks are fitted forward of the axles. The van rides on tandem-axle, load-sharing roller-rocker suspension but no shock absorbers. On the drawbar, with a standard ball coupling, are two 9kg gas cylinders.

External storage on the RSV is quite good – with both a front boot and tunnel storage. The front boot also houses the electrical panel which comes with all the essentials, including a battery charger, a 150W solar panel regulator and 12V fuses.

All the cabinetry is constructed from a meranti timber frame and a ply timber face. None of that can be seen, of course, because it is all finished in a glossy acrylic – in this case, a light coffee colour for the doors and benchtops, with a matching shade for the upholstery and white for just about everything else.
