Isuzu DMax OPENER 3

Reliable and powerful, the Isuzu D-Max has the power to get you - and your caravan - where you need to go.

The Isuzu D-Max is closely related to the Holden Colorado, sharing its chassis and body architecture. A key difference is the powertrain; a VM Motori-sourced 3L engine and six-speed auto is used in Colorado while Isuzu uses its own engine and a five-speed auto.

The D-Max doesn’t have the power and torque figures or the six-speed automatic option (or eight-speed, in the case of the Amarok) of its key competitors, but it does come with an extensive standard equipment list in the new top-of-the-range model, the LS-Terrain (LS-T), tested here.

Standard gear on the LS-T includes leather seats (with power adjustment for the driver’s seat), rearview camera, 17in alloy wheels, roof rails, chrome power-fold side mirrors, side steps, front fog lights and a passive entry and start system. Other comforts include climate-control air-conditioning, cruise control, leather steering wheel and gearshift knob and a six-speaker CD/MP3/FM/AM touch screen audio unit with iPod and bluetooth audio streaming and satnav.

Safety is covered off with front, side, front side-curtain airbags, ABS brakes with EBD and EBA and traction and stability control.

The cabin is nothing unusual for a dual-cab ute, with its two front buckets and rear three-seater bench. There is plenty of room front and rear and, while seats are not as supportive as you might hope, they are comfortable for a long day behind the wheel. Vision is good to the front and sides, and while rear vision is not that great for parking, the rear-vision camera is excellent.
