The LandCruiser 200 Series Sahara makes small work out of big trips, making it the perfect partner for off road adventures.

Toyota’s longest-running model series has been the subject of a number of minor updates, but the core strengths of the 200 Series LandCruiser introduced in 2007 remain unchanged, eight years on. Its huge popularity in Australia – its most enthusiastic market, where Toyota says it enjoys an unassailable 83 per cent share of the large ‘body-on-frame’ 4WD market – is rising. And with the upgraded 2016 model LandCruiser now on sale, that share is only going to get better.


Let’s start with the obvious: the LandCruiser 200 Series is a big vehicle. Weighing just over 2.7t in Sahara spec, measuring nearly 5m long, just shy of 2m wide and standing 1.9m tall – more than 2m with the optional, full-length Toyota roof rack that was fitted to one of our Saharas – it’s not your vehicle of choice if you live in a major city and plan to use it for your daily commuting. The LandCruiser 200 Series is a big picture, big trip 4WD but, in our big country, it shrinks into its surroundings.


Purists expressed dismay when independent front suspension became standardised on the 200 Series, with some diehards complaining that Toyota had ‘over-developed’ its trademark model to fit into modern, 21st century motoring. To them, I say, ‘sorry, things have moved on’. For the majority of today’s LC200 users, any trade-off for long-distance driving comfort has clearly been welcomed when you look at the sales figures.
