Absolutely love coming to Werribee Zoo. The safari bus is always a favourite.
I'm a member so there was no wait at all to get in. Highly recommend becoming a member of you're going to visit a few times & want to see the other zoos as well. Otherwise, buy tickets online beforehand to save having to wait in the long queue on a busy day.
Specifically came to see the elephants this time. Such a great set up! Be warned that it is a bit of a walk to the elephants with minimal shade.
A few food options & water bottle fill up stations all over which was really helpful on a warm Summer day.

If you’re looking for a zoo experience that feels less like a series of cages and more like a trip to the Savannah, Werribee Open Range Zoo is the place to be. We visited recently and were absolutely blown away by the quality of the exhibits and the care shown to the animals.

Why It’s a Must-Visit:

* The Safari Tour: This is the undisputed highlight. Included with your entry, the bus tour takes you out into the open plains where giraffes, rhinos, zebras, and antelopes roam together. It feels incredibly immersive—having a giraffe walk right past your window is a memory my family won't forget!
* Spacious Enclosures: It’s refreshing to see animals with so much room to move. The lion habitat is stunning, and the gorilla enclosure is one of the best I’ve ever seen.
* Walkable Trails: The Peta-Warin and African River trails are beautifully landscaped and easy to navigate. The hippos and meerkats were definitely crowd favorites.
* Family Friendly: There are plenty of great play areas for the kids and shaded spots to rest. The staff and volunteers are also incredibly knowledgeable and clearly passionate about conservation.
A Few Quick Tips:
* Book Ahead: Especially for the Safari bus, as spots fill up fast.
* Wear Comfortable Shoes: There’s a fair amount of walking if you want to see everything outside of the bus tour.
* Weather Prep: Since it's an open-range zoo, it can get quite windy or sunny, so pack accordingly!

Overall, Werribee Zoo offers a world-class experience that balances education, conservation, and pure wonder. It’s well worth the drive from Melbourne. We’ll definitely be back!

It’s genuinely unbelievable how close you get to the resident animals . Being in the safari van as the sun sets, with giraffes and rhinoceroses & zebras right beside you feels surreal. The hour-long drive is immersive, calm, and absolutely unforgettable.

What elevates an already beautiful  experience is the staff. We spoke to several team members along the way, and every single one took the time to explain what we were seeing, answer questions, and share their deep passion for the animals and the conservation work happening behind the scenes. Their pride in what they do is obvious.

We are incredibly lucky to have an experience like this right here in Victoria. World-class, moving, and beautifully done.

The Sunset Safari at Werribee Open Range Zoo is one of those experiences that quietly exceeds expectations and stays with you long after you leave.

The scenery in the golden hour light is absolutely stunning — wide open savannah views with animals moving freely as the sun sets. Seeing the rhinos, giraffes, zebras, and antelopes up close in this light feels genuinely special, almost surreal. And then there were the many, many rabbits darting around — an unexpected delight, especially for little ones.

The safari drive allows for a closer, more immersive look than a standard visit. It never feels rushed, and there’s time to really observe the animals and ask questions. The staff are knowledgeable, welcoming, and clearly passionate, sharing thoughtful insights while keeping the atmosphere relaxed and family-friendly.

A lovely surprise was the live African music and dance performance — warm, energetic, and inviting without being overwhelming. It added a beautiful cultural layer to the experience and really set the mood for the evening.

The grazing snack box was very well prepared and generous — easily enough for two adults and one toddler as a light dinner. Fresh, well-balanced, and thoughtfully put together, it made the experience feel complete and well-organised.

Everything ran smoothly, from start to finish, with staff who made everyone feel genuinely welcome. It’s a fantastic option for families, couples, or anyone wanting a calmer, more atmospheric way to experience the zoo.

Highly recommend the Sunset Safari if you’re looking for something memorable, relaxed, and a little bit magical.

We arrived at 9am at opening, very very few animals to he seen. Mostly they were still locked up. If upturned open at 9 animals should be out.
The elephant enclosure was amazing   zoo keepers talk very informative. A huge amount of money for 9 elephants!
The queue for Safari ride was 1hr 20 min wait. Very disorganised took way too long to unload and didnt fill every carriage. There were 10 free seats in our carriage alone, very frustrating. Very informative and worth the wait.
Overall a disappointing day
